While not every PCS works this way, military members and their families often get asked to turn in a dream sheet or wish list of places they want to move on their next PCS. Sometimes those lists are based off a short set of available choices. Sometimes the options are longer.
But it's a long running joke in the military community that if you list your duty station preferences ranked 1 to 10, you'll definitely get 10 or, even better, secret sucky option number 11.
But sometimes, just sometimes, you do get what you wanted. And if you didn't? It's always possible that you get there and find out that it's great after all.
