YMCA work with the military began several years before the Civil War, when it set up a small library on a Navy training ship in Portsmouth, Va. Work with American troops expanded dramatically during the Civil War, when a group of YMCAs formed what they called the "U.S. Christian Commission" which marshaled the services of more than 5,000 volunteers. They served alongside the troops on the battlefields, in hospitals and POW camps, and in support of activities for troops in the north and south.
