Report from Monster and Military.com finds significant use of state veteran employment resources
McLean, Va – Monster (NYSE: MWW) and Military.com today announced the results of the first ever Ohio Veterans Talent Index, a statewide report on veteran employment which reveals Ohio has expanding job opportunities, a confident pool of transitioning service members who are dedicated to Ohio, and employers committed to hiring veterans. The Ohio Veterans Talent Index found strong employer engagement with veteran hiring initiatives, with 85 percent reporting the use of state employment resources to recruit and engage talented veterans, including OhioMeansJobs.com and services provided by Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
“Monster and our Military.com team developed the Ohio Veterans Talent Index to ensure the availability of solid intelligence needed to solve veteran employment challenges and implement programs that create professional opportunities for our dedicated service members,” said Steve Cooker, executive vice president of Monster Government Solutions.“Through our close collaboration with Ohio’s leadership and employers, we’re seeing real evidence that these resources are being utilized and making a positive impact for veterans within Ohio communities.”
Currently 843,000 veterans, including 90,000 post-9-11 veterans, call Ohio their home. The Veterans Talent Index report shows that the overwhelming majority of Ohio veterans plan to stay in the state indefinitely. With so many veterans making up the current and future Ohio workforce, Veterans Talent Index hiring data reveal some encouraging trends. More than 70 percent of Ohio employers have hired more than one veteran in the past year and nearly all surveyed employers gave veterans a positive evaluation. Veteran-specific resources in Ohio have grown over the past several years, including a new military skills translator on OhioMeansJobs.com, as well as the new Veterans Business Support Center, launched by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, which serves as a one-stop-shop for employers looking to hire veterans.
“Ohio is home to the sixth largest veteran population in the country, and our veterans serve as crucial leaders within our communities and our workforce,” said John Weber, Deputy Director, Office of Workforce Development at the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. “The results of the Ohio Veterans Talent Index are extremely encouraging, and we’re committed to working with employers to ensure that Ohio veterans have access to the career opportunities that they deserve.”
The Ohio Veterans Talent Index finds that in the first eight months of 2014, Ohio’s available jobs grew by 2 percent, withthe top hiring occupations in sales, transportation, material moving, and office and administrative support. At the same time, Ohio employers report that their most-needed jobs are in IT, transportation and health care.
National Veterans Talent Indexes have been conducted since 2011. The first Ohio index was conducted in August 2014. The index seeks to measure the effectiveness of state resources and veteran career confidence and to identify areas for improvement. It is a comprehensive analysis of transitioning military service members, veterans and their employers, including veterans who have been out of the military for less than five years, active duty service members who plan to leave the military within the next year, and employers who have hired at least one veteran in the past year.
