Tricare Select is a fee-for-service insurance plan that lets you see any doctor. If you visit a network doctor, you normally will have to pay only a small copay. This plan is available to active-duty family members, veterans and retirees. It is available worldwide.

If you visit an out-of-network doctor, you may have to pay all charges upfront and file a claim with Tricare for reimbursement.

In general, Tricare Select has higher out-of-pocket costs than Tricare Prime.

Tricare Groups

Tricare has two groups of members: Group A consists of those who entered the military before Jan. 1, 2018, and Group B are those who entered on that date or later.

Enrollment Fee

For active-duty members and their families, there is no enrollment fee.

For family members of retirees in Group A, the annual enrollment fee is $181.92 for an individual and $364.92 for a family in 2025.

For family members of veterans/retirees in Group B, there is a $579 individual or $1,158.96 family enrollment fee in 2025.

Retirees must pay their enrollment fee via allotment from their retired pay.

For information on how to enroll, see the Tricare website.
