COLUMBIA, S.C. - The South Carolina Army National Guard is providing fourteen wrecker teams to various staging areas in the state to support the S.C. Department of Public safety in response to the dangerous ice storm sweeping across the southeast. This was following the Declaration of State of Emergency by S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley Feb. 11, 2014.
More than 100 S.C. Army National Guard soldiers have been activated for State Active Duty to assist as part of wrecker team and support personnel to areas impacted by the ice storm, which include three liaison officers supporting the Emergency Operations Centers at Greenwood, Greenville, and Fort Mill. The wrecker teams are operating out of areas expected to be most impacted by the hazardous weather, including Greenwood, Rock Hill, Greenville, Anderson, Spartanburg, Fountain Inn, Gaffney, Fort Mill, Orangeburg, and Wellford.
Their mission is to assist the S.C. Highway Patrol aid motorists during the ice storm that is creating dangerous conditions on the roadways. A wrecker team consists on one wrecker and two HMMWVs and eight soldiers who rotate 24 hour operations.
"Our citizens should exercise caution and follow warnings and weather advisories, as our state is impacted by this dangerous ice storm.
