Why pay for tax preparation and filing software when you don't have to? Free tax preparation services are once again available to active duty members, retirees, veterans, and their families.

Free Tax Filing for Active Duty Members & Reservists

Free tax preparation and assistance is available through Military One Source's MilTax service for active duty, national guard and reserve members as well as their dependents. Retirees and veterans can also use the service within 1 year of leaving the service.

MilTax consultants with Military OneSource are specially trained to help with unique tax situations specific to service members and their families. Help is available around the clock.

The Coast Guard also offers free online tax filing through the CGSUPRT portal. If you have questions about this tax service or about your own tax returns, please call 855-CG SUPRT (247-8778) and ask to schedule an appointment with a CG SUPRT tax consultant. Trained tax consultants are available 5 days a week (Monday - Friday) from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., EST by appointment.

Free Tax Preparation for Retirees and Veterans

Retirees can receive free tax advice and preparation assistance through Military Judge Advocate General (JAG) offices. See our Free Legal Assistance Page for more details.

Veterans who make $58,000 or less may receive free tax advice and preparation assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. See the IRS website for more details

AARP offers free tax advice and preparation assistance to low and moderate income taxpayers, with special attention given to those 60 and older. See the AARP website for more details.

There are many other service available at the local and community level. A good place to check for help is your local library.

Free Tax Preparation Options

Most commercial tax preparation software offers free filing options for military members or those who make less than a certain amount of money. If your 2021 adjusted gross income was $73,000 or less, you may find one or more free file online options for you. Review each company's offer to make sure you qualify for a free federal return. Some companies offer free state tax returns; others may charge a fee.

Some companies who tout free service for military members charge a fee for officers or a fee to file your return. Make sure you read the fine print.

If you have an uncomplicated return you can prepare and file your taxes for free using the IRS website.
