‘Washington is Wrong’: How Naval Intelligence Won at ‘Midway’

The first trailer dropped for director Roland Emmerich's long-gestating "Midway" and it looks like Combat Intelligence Officer Edwin Layton (played by Patrick Wilson) will be the movie's hero.

In a showdown with Admiral Chester Nimitz (Woody Harrelson), Layton calls Pearl Harbor "the greatest intelligence failure in American history" (up until that moment, obviously) and predicts that the Japanese are planning something bigger at Midway.

After Nimitz tells him that "Washington disagrees," Layton puts his nuts on the line and declares, "Washington is wrong."

SPOILER: Layton is right and the Navy goes on to win one of the great victories of World War II.

"Midway" opens in theaters on November 8 just it time for Veterans Day. The movie also stars Ed Skrein, Luke Evans, Aaron Eckhart, Nick Jonas, Darren Criss, Luke Kleintank, Mandy Moore and Dennis Quaid. Japanese forces are played by Etsushi Toyokawa, Tadanobu Asano and Jun Kunimura.

The movie is a passion project for director Emmerich, who also directed "Independence Day" and "The Patriot." He spoke to us about the movie earlier this month.

The 1976 version depended heavily on newsreel footage shot by American and Japanese forces to recreate the battle. Over forty years later, special effects technology has made quantum leaps and we're looking forward to see how if it can handle one of the most epic air/sea battles of all time.
