Will Our Hero Be Court-Martialed in 'Top Gun: Maverick'?

"Top Gun: Maverick" debuted a new commercial during the Super Bowl, and it brings up so many questions about our hero Capt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell.

The biggest one remains: How has Maverick survived in the Navy for the last 35 years? If we concede that he's survived irresponsible and risky hot-dogging because he's an incredibly great pilot, how do we process his ongoing issues with authority?

Check out the commercial, and then let's discuss:

Maverick is up to something here. As he slices through the clouds, we hear an ominous voiceover from a commanding officer who sounds like Jon Hamm (who's in the movie, so let's say it's Hamm): "You know what happens if you go through with this. I have everything I need to have you court-martialed and dishonorably discharged."

Of course, Maverick's going to go through with whatever he's being warned not to do. Does that mean we get some courtroom scenes straight out of "A Few Good Men" with Maverick snarling, "You can't handle the truth!"? Will the brass finally realize that Maverick is so good that the rules just can't apply to him?

The movie also hints at some unfinished business from Maverick's past when he's confronted by a surprising voice: "My dad believed in you. I'm not going to make the same mistake," says Son of Goose.

It's not surprising that Goose's son (call sign: Rooster and played by Miles Teller) would have issues with the guy whose recklessness contributed to the death of the father he never really knew.

What is shocking is that Rooster has to be at least 35 years old (if Goose really is his father and there's not some frozen sperm/test tube thing involved) and he's a candidate at Top Gun school. How are they going to explain that?

All of these questions will be answered this summer when "Top Gun: Maverick" opens in theaters June 26.
