We hoped (and even pretended) that this news wasn't coming, but now it's official. Paramount Pictures has moved the "Top Gun: Maverick" release from June 24 to Dec. 23, 2020.
When the upcoming Fast & Furious sequel "F9" was bumped almost a full year to April 2021, there was considerable worry that "Top Gun: Maverick" would face a similar delay if the studio decided that a June release was no longer feasible.
December is several long months away, but here's hoping we'll get to see all the surprises that Tom Cruise and the studio had planned to set up for the movie. Cruise has long shown impressive creativity when it comes to getting the word out around his "Mission: Impossible" and "Jack Reacher" movies, and there were early signs that they had some incredibly special things planned for "Maverick."
"Top Gun: Maverick" sees Cruise and Val Kilmer return from the original cast. They're joined this time by Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis and Danny Ramirez.
