Ford has produced its Expedition SUV since 1997, and back then, the family SUV market was much smaller. Now, these behemoths are some of the most popular cars on US roads, meaning the expedition has to prove itself a lot more against its overseas rivals like the Toyota Sequoia or even the Nissan Armada. Since the market is filled with a huge number of mountain-sized SUVs, we thought we'd choose our favorite Ford Expedition competitors to help you make the best purchasing decision.
With not everyone making SUVs quite as big as some of the US brands, we've also given you some options on the used market, as there are some hidden deals that you might not have considered. With a used car, you get peace of mind that it's proven itself to be reliable, and you won't have to deal with waiting for your car to arrive.
Note
This article features some alternatives to the Ford Expedition in terms of segment and specifications; some competitors may be very different in price or vary in size - we justify why. This list is not exhaustive and considers new cars only. Specs listed are for two comparable trims from each model, where necessary. Prices are correct at the time of writing, and exclude destination, options, and fees. Manufacturers reserve the right to change prices at any time without notice. We rank these Make Model competitors by MSRP, starting with the highest and finishing with the lowest.
2026 Ford Expedition Overview
| Ford Expedition Specs | |
|---|---|
| Engine | 3.5L Twin-turbo V6 |
| Transmission | 10-speed Automatic |
| Drivetrain | RWD/AWD |
| Power | 400 hp (440 in high-output version) |
| Torque | 480 lb-ft (510 in high-output version) |
| Fuel efficiency (city/highway/combined) | RWD: 16/24/19 mpg AWD: 15/22/18 mpg |
| Starting price | $62,400 |
The 2026 Ford Expedition is a capable full-size SUV that comes in two flavors. There's the regular Expedition, then the Expedition MAX that increases the wheelbase length by almost ten inches, giving you a lot more cargo space but no more legroom in the third row. It's not like you need it, though, as the rearmost seats get 36.5 inches of space for your knees, which is more than enough. In regular form, there's 21.6 cubic feet of space with all the seats up, or 36.1 cubic feet when you order the MAX.
You can also choose from two engine outputs, although the basic layout is the same. In its most potent form, the 440-horsepower 3.5L twin-turbo V6 is enough to haul a full load easily, but the regular version should be enough for most people. The maximum towing capacity is 9,600 lbs.
The interior is a love-it-or-hate-it situation, with two large screens as the main attraction. One of these screens sits in the middle, like most other Ford models, but the other is located right underneath the windshield to increase visibility for the driver. These two screens come as standard, as well as a 360-degree camera (useful with such a large car), adaptive cruise control, tri-zone climate control, as well as 18-inch wheels. It's not as well-stacked on the base model as some of its competitors, though.
2026 GMC Yukon
Starting Price: $69,600
| GMC Yukon Specs | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | 5.3L V8 | 6.2L V8 | 3.0L Turbo-diesel Inline-six |
| Transmission | 10-speed automatic | ||
| Drivetrain | RWD/AWD | ||
| Power | 355 hp | 420 hp | 305 hp |
| Torque | 383 lb-ft | 460 lb-ft | 495 lb-ft |
| Fuel Efficiency (city/highway/combined) | RWD: 15/20/17 mpg AWD: 15/19/17 mpg | RWD: 15/20/17 mpg AWD: 14/18/16 mpg | RWD: 21/26/23 mpg AWD: 20/24/22 mpg |
If you want a luxury SUV while staying within the GM brands, the GMC Yukon might be your best bet. Although it starts at a higher cost, you get much more base features, such as a huge 17-inch screen, heated front and second-row seats, and a huge 144.5 cubic feet of space in the Yukon XL. You get the usual choice of GM engines here, and we'd suggest the diesel for long trips, which the Ford does not offer at all.
2026 Toyota Sequoia
Starting Price: $64,025
| Toyota Sequoia Specs | |
|---|---|
| Engine | 3.4L Twin-turbo V6 Hybrid |
| Transmission | 10-speed Automatic |
| Drivetrain | RWD/AWD |
| Power | 437 hp |
| Torque | 583 lb-ft |
| Fuel efficiency (city/highway/combined) | RWD: 21/24/22 mpg AWD: 19/22/20 mpg |
Just like the tree it's named after, the Toyota Sequoia is big with big features. The huge grille and lights at the front make this car a bit more imposing than many vehicles similar to the Ford Expedition. The hybrid system helps the car achieve greater torque and power, although it doesn't help much with the fuel efficiency, which is something you'd expect a Toyota to excel at. Still, you get standard heated seats, a moonroof and acoustic glass, which makes it better-specced than other Expedition competitors.
2026 Chevrolet Suburban
Starting Price: $63,700
| Chevrolet Suburban Specs | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | 5.3L V8 | 6.2L V8 | 3.0L Turbo-diesel Inline-6 |
| Transmission | 10-speed Automatic | ||
| Drivetrain | RWD/AWD | ||
| Power | 355 hp | 420 hp | 305 hp |
| Torque | 383 lb-ft | 460 lb-ft | 495 lb-ft |
| Fuel Efficiency (city/highway/combined) | RWD: 15/20/17 mpg AWD: 14/19/16 mpg | RWD: 15/19/16 mpg AWD: 14/18/16 mpg | RWD: 21/26/23 mpg AWD: 20/24/22 mpg |
The Chevrolet Suburban is the full-size SUV we all know. You get the same engine choice as the Tahoe, but be warned about the 6.2L V8. It's currently part of a large recall, and it's also not super fuel efficient in either RWD or AWD form. With the diesel engine, though, you get a 644-mile range, which is great in comparison with the Ford Expedition. Those who like big things will love this car, as it comes with the best-in-class cargo volume of 144.5 cubic feet, as well as a 17.7-inch central screen.
2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer
Starting Price: $62,145
| Jeep Grand Wagoneer Specs | ||
|---|---|---|
| Engine | 3.0L Twin-turbo Inline-six | Extended-range EV, 3.6L V6 Generator |
| Transmission | 8-speed Automatic | NA |
| Drivetrain | RWD/AWD | unknown |
| Power | 420 hp | 647 hp |
| Torque | 468 lb-ft | 620 lb-ft |
| Fuel efficiency (city/highway/combined) | TBA | |
The Wagoneer is no more, with only the luxurious Grand Wagoneer remaining as Jeep's full-size SUV. It toes the line between off-roader and luxury vehicle well, although AWD is not standard. If you want to tow, the Jeep will be your best choice out of the Ford Expedition alternatives thanks to a maximum rating of 10,000 lbs compared to Ford's 9,600 lb max. Like the Expedition, the Grand Wagoneer's 'L' version only increases cargo space and not third-row legroom, but it does have more cargo space at the back than the Ford with 42.6 cubic feet. There will also be an extended-range EV version, but we know less about that currently.
2026 Chevrolet Tahoe
Starting Price: $60,700
| Chevrolet Tahoe Specs | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine | 5.3L V8 | 6.2L V8 | 3.0L Turbo-diesel Inline-six |
| Transmission | 10-speed Automatic | ||
| Drivetrain | RWD/AWD | ||
| Power | 355 hp | 420 hp | 305 hp |
| Torque | 383 lb-ft | 460 lb-ft | 495 lb-ft |
| Fuel Efficiency (city/highway/combined) | RWD: 15/20/17 mpg AWD: 15/19/17 mpg | RWD: 15/20/17 mpg AWD: 14/18/16 mpg | RWD: 22/26/24 mpg AWD: 20/24/22 mpg |
The Tahoe is one of Ford's main rivals, and even though it's the smaller brother of the Suburban above, it's not short-changed. This is the car to choose if you need to take a lot of luggage over a long distance, as you find 122.7 cubic feet of space with all the seats folded, a SuperCruise hands-free system to take some of the stress of highway driving away, and a 3.0L turbo-diesel engine that has a range for around 600 miles. If you don't need the extra space that a Suburban offers, the Tahoe is a great bet.
