It seems like crossplay is a fairly new idea in the past decade, but it has in fact been a feature in games for longer. For example, one of the more prominent ones was Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001, which was a 2001 release. PS2 and Dreamcast players could play together, and there were even catchy magazine ads to showcase it.

A more modern example is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and there are tons of other multiplayer crossplay games. Are there any RPGs with this feature though? Let’s jump into the rabbit hole and find out for any RPG fans who have friends between multiple consoles.

Borderlands 4

Millions Of Guns Are Waiting

  • Crossplay Options: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
  • Co-Op Options: Two Local/Four Online

Borderlands 4 is the latest co-op game to offer crossplay between consoles. It’s also one of the few games that still offer split-screen co-op for local play, along with online options. Four players, between all consoles and PC, can join together in the campaign and if players want, they can turn crossplay off.

With four characters to choose from and billions of guns to find, Borderlands 4 should keep players occupied in its open-world biomes for a while. Additionally, it offers the ability to replay missions, a significant change for the Borderlands series.

Monster Hunter Wilds

Enjoy Some Meat Together

  • Crossplay Options: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S
  • Co-Op Options: Four Online

Monster Hunter Wilds no longer requires Monster Hunter fans to play co-op to have a good time, as there are AI-assistant characters. However, co-op is still one of the best reasons to buy the game. Up to four players can fight monsters online in the campaign or side missions, or just explore the world between the consoles and PC version. Also, crossplay can be disabled in the co-op menu.

Another big feature change is that the game is fully open-world now, meaning players can go from one end of the map to the other if they just want to explore on their mount, which is called a Seikret. Choose one of fourteen weapons, master them, build new gear from monster parts, and repeat.

Diablo 4

Face Evil Across All Consoles

Choosing a class in Diablo 4
  • Crossplay Options: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S
  • Co-Op Options: Two Local/Four Online

Diablo 4 is yet another game that evolved into an open-world experience, which is quite expansive even from a top-down perspective. The classes were classic to the Diablo series, like Rogue and Sorcerer. Diablo 4 is a great game for anyone who wants to play couch co-op with a friend, but a well-divided group of classes online would be more strategic.

There are many consoles to choose from, all of which talk to each other, including the PC version. Logging into Battle.net will make the connections smoother for everyone. While the story is more impressive than ever before, Diablo 4 is still designed around zoning out with friends and looting dungeons. It’s still fun alone as well, and isn’t too difficult depending on the setting.
