Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke says Divinity will be "way better" than the studio's smash hit Baldur's Gate 3. While Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 may have swept The Game Awards 2025, Larian made one of the bigger splashes of the night when it unveiled its next game after a mysterious and unconventional marketing push before the ceremony. Details on the new Divinityare still relatively scarce, but its creator thinks it could be something truly special.
Leading up to TGA, Geoff Keighley posted a photo of a demonic-looking statue in the Mojave Desert that quickly made rounds across the internet. Speculation and confusion arose about what it could be teasing until fans noticed some new Divinity trademarks resembled the statue, all but guaranteeing an announcement about the RPG series was coming. A grisly cinematic trailer at the awards show confirmed that, and now that fans know a new Divinity game is coming, Larian is making some big promises about it.
Larian Studios' CEO Claims Divinity Will Be Even Better than Baldur's Gate 3
In an interview with Bloomberg, Vincke called Baldur's Gate 3 "good," but said he thinks Divinity "is going to be way better." Going off of that, he explained how adapting Dungeons & Dragons' rules and mechanics, which were designed for pen and paper, to a video game was a challenge for Baldur's Gate 3. While Larian's next game will also be a turn-based RPG like BG3 and D&D, Vincke says it will take things to "the next level." What exactly that means is uncertain, but the studio has claimed that Divinity will be Larian's biggest game to date, so fans do at least know the scale will be larger than BG3's.
While Vincke was coy about specifics, he did tease that the company is doing things fans "haven’t seen in RPGs before" inDivinity. The game will also move away from the conventional D&D formula for turn-based RPGs in favor of something made specifically for the video game medium, though it's unclear at the moment what that could look like. There are plenty of Baldur's Gate 3 features fans hope will appear in the new Divinity game, but the clunky inventory system is not one of them, so Larian could opt for a more streamlined way to organize things in its next effort. Longtime Larian fans can still expect some familiar elements, though, as Vincke said Divinity will feature "everything" the studio has become popular for in its previous games but could turn them up to 11.
Surpassing Baldur's Gate 3 won't be an easy task. While Larian has the help of a larger number of support studios than it has worked with in the past, Divinity has a lot to live up to, and not just in scale. The company struck gold with its last game, as Baldur's Gate 3 sat in Steam's Top Global Seller chart for two straight years and swept The Game Awards in 2023 the same way Clair Obscur has this time around. Still, Vincke seems confident that devs can one-up that momentous effort, so it's an exciting time to be an RPG fan.
