Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 voice actor Charlie Cox said at a late November event that any accolades he may earn for his portrayal of Gustave should go to the motion capture actor who portrayed him instead. Although Cox is among the nominees at The Game Awards 2025, the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 actor stated that his voice was just a part of the process that brought Gustave to life.
Cox is one of three actors nominated for their roles in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. He joins Ben Starr (Verso) and Jennifer English (Maelle) as nominees for Best Performance at The Game Awards 2025, which will be hosted on Thursday, December 11, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Cox's character, Gustave, is the main playable character for the first act of the critically-acclaimed RPG from French studio Sandfall Interactive. Gustave was the commander of the titular Expedition 33, whose actions and words were referenced by Maelle throughout the game's main story. Expedition 33 has already won several awards before TGA 2025, including Ultimate Game of the Year and Best Lead Performer (Jennifer English) during the 2025 Golden Joystick Awards held on November 20.
Charlie Cox Says Gustave's Motion Capture Actor Should Receive Credit for the Role
While Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is nominated for 10 different categories at The Game Awards, including Game of the Year and Best Narrative, Cox shared his thoughts about being recognized for his work as Gustave. During a late November event in Mexico, Cox stated that, while he was thrilled to receive recognition for his voice acting work, any awards that he may yet receive for voicing Gustave should instead go to Gustave's motion capture actor. Cox said that Gustave's motion capture actor was a French actor named Maxence Cazorla. Cox said, "I believe that the performance of that character is really down to him, and my voice was just part of that process."
Cox added that Cazorla was responsible for almost all of Gustave's motion capture throughout Expedition 33. Cox's thoughts came months after he stated that he needed to pick up a video game console to play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. He previously said that one of the last video games he recalled playing was Super Mario 64, and that graphics have come a long way since then.
