Would You Reenlist and Travel to the Future to Fight a 'Tomorrow War'?

Thirty years from now, aliens invade the planet. The government busts out its secret time-travel technology and sends soldiers back in time to recruit you to fight for your children's future. Do you drop everything and pick up arms?

That's the premise of Chris Pratt's new movie "The Tomorrow War." He plays Dan Forester, a veteran who's living a quiet life as a schoolteacher with a beautiful family. In the movie's universe, that's a double deferment (military and education), so he's not required to join the new fight.

But he does join the fight, because who wants to watch a movie where Chris Pratt doesn't splatter the alien menace? The movie is coming to Amazon Prime on July 2nd and they've just released a trailer.

Dan is sort of a dork who does the donkey bray from "It's a Wonderful Life" as a greeting with his daughter Muri (Ryan Kiera Armstrong). He looks like he's settled into a normal, post-combat life until the future soldiers appear on the field during a World Cup soccer match that's weirdly taking place during the Christmas season. Dan's switch flips and there's no way he's not getting back into it.

Betty Gilpin is Dan's wife Betty, who's not at all sure she wants her daughter's father heading off to a war with 70% casualties. He points out that if he doesn't go, they'll draft her instead. Fans of Gilipin's epic turn as a kickass veteran in 2020's "The Hunt" will wonder why they're not sending her to blow up the space monsters. That would be a great movie.

The movie also features J.K. Simmons ("Whiplash," Farmers Insurance guy) as Pratt's father and Yvonne Strahovski ("The Handmaid's Tale") as a scientist who teams with Pratt to devise a battle plan. Edwin Hodge ("Six," "The Purge" movies), Sam Richardson ("Veep") and Mary Lynn Rajskub ("24") round out the cast.

"The Tomorrow War" was made for Paramount and scheduled to be a big movie release for Christmas 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic destroyed that plan and the studio decided to offload the movie for streaming rather than keeping it on the shelf, just like they did with "Tom Clancy's Without Remorse."

"The Tomorrow War" is directed by Chris McKay, who got his start directing the animated Adult Swim shows "Robot Chicken" and "Morel Orel." That's a long way away from this kind of futuristic military action movie, so here's hoping McKay brings a fresh take on the genre.
