U.S. service members have helped apprehend more than 100,000 illegal immigrants, the U.S. Border Patrol's chief says.

The president's tweets come after several Mexican military personnel reportedly questioned U.S Army soldiers.

The Pentagon wouldn't address whether its troops deployed to the border should be exhibiting more force towards migrants.

President Trump said that he'll send more personnel to the border as his administration says the situation is deteriorating.

The costs of maintaining active-duty and National Guard troops on the border have risen to at least $235 million.

Trump said he was prepared to back a 3-year extension of protection for 700,000 immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally.

While the troops are staying on, the mission is changing.

Shanahan said the border troops are conducting daily operational training and focusing on the "restoration of fences."

The border mission with no name will continue past Christmas and through the end of January, the DoD announced on Tuesday.

The Pentagon is likely to extend the deployment of border troops to Jan. 31.
