Lawmakers on Thursday indicated they remained skeptical of the Pentagon's latest proposal to stand up a U.S. Space Force.

Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson said that STRATCOM commander Gen. John Hyten has been nominated for the position.

The Air Force is narrowing down the best location to house the Defense Department's newest unified combatant command.

U.S. Space Command has been called a stepping stone to creating a U.S. Space Force.

Shanahan said he envisions "15,000 to 20,000" individuals defending and protecting U.S. interests in the domain.

The DoD has requested funding for nearly 830 military service members and civilians to man the Space Force headquarters.

The Pentagon submitted its Space Force proposal to Congress, asking for $2 billion over five years to fund the newest branch.

"We are going to continue to perform a lot of the mission for Space Command in the STRATCOM headquarters," Gen. Hyten said.

It would be the fourth U.S. combatant command located in Florida.
