Most U.S. government agencies are in the middle of a federal hiring freeze, but the Department of Defense is still looking for workers. If you are a transitioning military member, the DoD still needs your experience, your security clearance and your downright good looks.

Still, you are the only one keeping an eye out for your career. Is a federal job a good bet for you during your military transition this year? Will federally employed military spouses continue to be exempt from the return-to-work order? Are these sweeping reductions in the federal workforce bound to affect you?

No one knows for sure. We live in an unknowable world right now -- which is one more factor complicating your transition or permanent change-of-station, or PCS, move. It is no wonder you don't know what to do for sure about federal employment.

One thing is certain, however. If you want employment at the DoD or the Department of Veterans Affairs -- two of the biggest employers of military veterans -- you are going to need a federal resume.

The Perfect Federal Job Requires a Perfect Federal Resume

A federal resume is nothing like the corporate resume you learned at the Transition Assistance Program, or TAP, or even our amazingly effective Checklist Resume. A federal resume is designed so that you can demonstrate on paper how you are qualified for the job so you can get an interview.

This is harder than it looks. If you have applied for jobs that seemed perfect for you, and you have been rejected time and time again at USAJOBS, you know what I mean. Chances are, you are writing the wrong kind of resume for the right kind of job.
