Army Tests VZ-4 VTOL Plane (1960)

The U.S. Army experimented with various vertical takeoff & landing (VTOL) aircraft during the 1950's. This short film shows one such prototype, the Doak VZ-4 which had a turbine engine mounted in the fuselage driving two wing-tip mounted tilting ducted fan propellers which allowed for VTOL operations as well as high speed flight. Only one aircraft was produced. Given serial number 56-6942. It is now on display at the U.S. Army Transportation Museum located at Fort Eustis, Virginia.
