Sergeant was Killed by Friendly Fire

AFGHANISTAN -- An Army report shows that a Fort Drum soldier killed back in 2011 died as a result of friendly fire. Shortly after the death of Sergeant Nathan Wyrick, 34, the Army explained it as "combat related injuries.” But a freedom of information act request by the Tacoma Tribune, shows that a faulty mortar round landed on a tent Wyrick was in. Six other soldiers were hurt. Wyrick, in Afghanistan at the time of his death, was a member of the Third Brigade Combat Team. The report said the soldiers in Wyrick's unit firing the mortars, followed all the appropriate procedures when firing and had the right calculations, even saying it turns out another similar mortar fire nearby also failed.
