How's an honest Marvel supervillain supposed to stop a superhero as powerful as Captain Marvel? Answering that question has probably been a puzzler for Hollywood writers looking to find a believable foil to a hero that single-handedly destroyed Thanos' spaceship by flying through it.
A new trailer for the next movie in the “Captain Marvel” saga answers that question. After solidly beating the Kree Empire in the first movie, Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) becomes intertwined with two other superheroes whose powers are also light-based: Every time they use those powers, they switch places.
This means Captain Marvel can no longer be the lone ranger of the galaxy. Making the jump to the big screen from Disney+ shows to join her are Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani, “Ms. Marvel”) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris, “WandaVision”).
The last time we saw Captain Marvel on Earth, it was at Tony Stark's funeral in 2019's “Avengers: Endgame.” Since then, she has been mysteriously absent, fighting battles on the far side of the cosmos. Admittedly, it's hard to know what to do with a superhero like Danvers. Marvel Studios spent more than a decade building up Thanos as the ultimate villain, and Captain Marvel punched him in the face the first time they met.
In her absence, Skrulls, shapeshifting aliens that Captain Marvel rescued from annihilation at the hands of the Kree, have found a new home on Earth. Spymaster Nick Fury fought to foil their plan to dominate the planet in “Secret Invasion.”
Now, a Kree warrior called Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton, “The Handmaid's Tale”) seeks to restore her home to its former glory after a civil war. With the power of a magical vambrace, she scrambles the power of Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel and Rambeau, likely with the assumption that the constant time- and space-swapping will prevent Danvers from putting up any real resistance to her plans.
Rambeau is the daughter of Danvers' former Air Force wingman, Maria Rambeau, and was phased out of existence during “The Blip.” In 1995, Maria Rambeau founded S.W.O.R.D. to protect Earth from extraterrestrial and extra-dimensional threats. In the five years before the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” her mother had died of cancer and the younger Rambeau joined her mother's organization.
Also returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for “The Marvels” is Goose, the lovable cat that is really Flerken, a super-intelligent alien race capable of incredible violence.
“The Marvels” is due in theaters Nov. 10, 2023.
