A new outreach project from the Biden Foundation is looking to feature submissions from both military and civilian kids that show what home means to them.
The "Picturing Home" project will feature selected submissions on the foundation's website and social media throughout April, officials said in a release. Kids can send in art, photos or even essays on the theme.
The Biden Foundation, started by former Vice President Joe Biden and his spouse Jill, is a nonprofit organization that looks to 'identify policies that advance the middle class, decrease economic inequality, and increase opportunity for all people," according to its website. One of the organization's primary focuses is supporting military families, a cause Jill Biden helped champion through Joining Forces while in the White House.
That the project is open to all kids, military or otherwise, is an important facet and purposefully a part of overarching military child theme, officials said. By bringing both groups to the table, the foundation hopes to show the similarities between kids of all backgrounds, while also highlighting some of the challenges military kids face in establishing what is traditionally thought of as "home."
"We also recognize the value of building bridges between military-connected and civilian children," Jill Biden said in a release. "As a teacher, I see my students from inside the military community and outside, working together and supporting one another every day. I also know that civilian teachers, students, and communities can make a huge difference by supporting military families. Through Picturing Home, we celebrate the beauty of what makes our students unique -- but we also celebrate those things that make us more similar than we think."
About 2 million children have a parent in the military.
Picturing Home submissions can be sent in via the Biden Foundation website.
