Three Cheers for Turkey Day!

Thanksgiving is hands-down my favorite holiday.

No wrapping, no shopping, no stressing about who gets what or how much to spend on him or her or their kids. Minimal house decorating. It's really only one big day to plan, as opposed to thirty-eleven smaller events PLUS the big day.

It's all about the food and the football and just plain hanging out. We stuff ourselves silly by 1:00 pm and then watch football until we think we can squeeze in one more piece of pie. We play a few board games, or run around outside awhile.

By about 6:30 or 7:00, the leftovers make an appearance, and we decide that it'd be a shame to waste all the effort that somebody put into dragging them all out of the fridge... so we eat some more.

Every year, I love to have a potluck with one or two other families. We usually invite a few single soldiers along, too. While we have a few favorite dishes that my husband insists that I make, I also enjoy sampling other recipes... and it's nice to not have to do all the cooking myself. Kids run all over the house, in and out, playing and laughing, and much the same can be said of the adults.

It feels like home, like family, even if I'm not actually related to everyone who sits at our table every year.

What are your plans for Thanksgiving this year?  Do you have any hard-and-fast traditions or recipes you'd like to share?
