Military Wife Quote: The Days Are Long

Share

“Today is the longest day.  Will it EVER end?!”

We’ve all had those thoughts.  We’ve all complained about long days as we pull out our hair, nurse our headaches and curse our demanding boss/kids’ tantrums/sinus infection/husband’s deployment/flat tire/lines at the commissary.  We all have those days, especially when our husbands are gone and nothing seems to be going our way.   The days drag on.

At the same time, we often catch ourselves thinking, “Where did the time go?  It seems to pass in the blink of an eye.”

Another universal feeling we all mutter as we realize our youngest child is starting kindergarten/our laugh lines are more pronounced/our 20th high school reunion is looming/it’s PCS time again/the deployment is almost over.   The pages of the calendar turn, and suddenly we’re left wondering how time escaped us and magically disappeared.

On those days when I feel the hands of the clock are standing still, I remind myself of a quote from Gretchen Rubin, author of the book The Happiness Project: "The days are long, but the years are short."

Yes, somehow those really long days turn into really short years.

That’s why we have to make the best of every day, regardless of how long some of those days may feel, regardless of how long the deployment has dragged on, regardless of how long it takes to unpack all those boxes.  Because before we know it, years pass us by while we’re busy just trying to get through those long days.

So what are you going to do to make the best of today?
